Pesantren is an Islamic educational institution that provides religious and academic education to its students. It is rooted in the Indonesian culture and is often associated with the Islamic tradition. There are various synonyms for Pesantren that people use to denote the same idea. For example, in Malaysia, Pesantren is known as Pondok, whereas in Pakistan it is called Madrassa.
