Pessary is a medical device that is commonly used by women to treat various pelvic disorders like uterine prolapse, urinary incontinence, and other vaginal problems. However, there are several synonyms for the word pessary which can be used interchangeably to refer to these medical aids. Some of these synonyms include vaginal ring, vaginal diaphragm, vaginal cap, pelvic sling, and vaginal support device among others. All these devices work differently but have one goal in common: provide support to the pelvic organs and reduce symptoms of the pelvic disorder. While pessaries have been in use for many years, advances in technology have led to the development of newer, more comfortable and effective devices.
