Pinnipeds are aquatic mammals characterised by their flippers and streamlined bodies. As a collective term, pinnipeds refer to seals, sea lions, and walruses. While these three species are easily identifiable creatures, there are a few lesser-known members of the pinniped family, such as the hooded and bearded seals. In addition, the term flippered friends has been used as an endearing synonym to describe pinnipeds. Another synonym is the term "finfooted" which highlights the aquatic lifestyle of these animals. Pinnipeds are integral parts of marine ecosystems and play essential roles in the food chain, making them valuable creatures to both the environment and humans.
