Pronunciation: [plˈantɑːɹˌɪs] (IPA)

Plantaris is a muscle in the human body that is found in the lower half of the leg. It is sometimes referred to as the "third hamstring" because of its position and function. However, there are several synonyms for the term plantaris that are used in different contexts. These include plantar flexor muscle, ankle plantar flexor, gastrocnemius muscle, and triceps surae. The plantar flexor muscle is responsible for bending the ankle joint downwards. Whereas, gastrocnemius muscle and triceps surae are located in the calf region and responsible for extending the ankle joint to produce push-off force. Regardless of the synonym used, the plantaris muscle serves as an important component of the lower extremity's muscle chain.
