Pomolobus pseudoharengus is the scientific name for the alewife, a species of fish found in the Atlantic Ocean. While the scientific name is specific to this type of fish, there are many synonyms used to refer to it in common language. Some of these synonyms include sawbelly, buckie, gaspergou, gray herring, and lake herring. In certain regions, the alewife is also referred to as a "schnook" or "kiack." Regardless of what it's called, the alewife often plays an important role in the food chain of the ecosystem it inhabits, and is frequently used as a commercial or recreational fishing target.
