Porphyrio Porphyrio is commonly referred to as the Purple Swamphen, but there are also several synonyms for this bird species. One of them is Porphyrio melanotus, which is the name used by some authorities. Other synonyms include Porphyrio porphyrio poliocephalus, commonly known as the Grey-headed Swamphen or African Purple Swamphen, and Porphyrio indicus, or the White-breasted Waterhen. Additionally, the bird may be referred to as the Purple Coot or Purple Moorhen. These synonyms all refer to the same bird species found in wetlands and marshy areas across Africa, Asia, and Australia. The distinctive plumage of these birds, which includes bright blue and purple hues, makes them easily recognizable in their native habitats.
