Posttraumatic amnesia (PTA), also known as traumatic amnesia, refers to a condition where an individual experiences memory loss following a traumatic event such as an accident, injury or head trauma. There are several synonyms for PTA, including retrograde amnesia, dissociative amnesia, anterograde amnesia, concussion syndrome, and postconcussional syndrome. Retrograde amnesia is a type of amnesia where people lose memories of events that occurred before the traumatic event. Dissociative amnesia is a type of memory loss where someone forgets things associated with an incident. Anterograde amnesia refers to difficulties in creating new memories after the traumatic event. Concussion and postconcussional syndrome are conditions that can occur as a result of a blow to the head and can lead to PTA.
