A Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) is a type of health insurance plan that allows you to select a primary care physician and specialists without a referral. However, when it comes to referring to PPO, there are various synonyms used within the insurance industry. For instance, some call it a Network-Based Plan, which means that it allows policyholders to visit network providers at a discounted rate. Another synonym is Fee-for-Service, which means that physicians are paid for their services on a fee basis. PPO is also known as Managed Care because it requires subscribers to use in-network providers to receive maximum benefits. Lastly, the term Participating Provider Organization is also used to refer to a PPO.
