Prince Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von Metternich was one of the most prominent statesmen in 19th century Europe. Synonyms that could be used to describe him include: Austrian diplomat, statesman, conservative politician, chancellor, foreign minister, and aristocrat. Metternich is best known for his role in the Congress of Vienna in 1815 which aimed to restore order and stability to Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. He was a staunch advocate for the Holy Alliance, a coalition of conservative monarchies, and was one of the main architects of the Concert of Europe which attempted to maintain peaceful relations between the major powers of the continent. Despite his controversial legacy, Metternich remains an important figure in European history.
