Prostatotomy is a medical procedure in which a surgeon makes an incision in the prostate gland to treat various prostate diseases such as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Synonymous terms for prostatotomy include prostatectomy, prostate surgery, prostate resection, and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Another term for prostatotomy is transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP), which is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. TURP and TUIP are commonly used to treat BPH, while other forms of prostatectomy may be required for cancerous conditions. Regardless of the type of prostatotomy performed, the goal is to improve urinary function and alleviate symptoms caused by prostate disease.
