Protoactinium is a chemical element with the symbol Pa and atomic number 91. Protoactinium is a highly radioactive actinide and the first non-primordial element to be discovered. The element was first identified in 1913 by Kasimir Fajans and Oswald Helmuth Göhring. Protoactinium is also known by its synonyms such as eka-actinium, brevium, protoactinium, and actinon. Eka-actinium refers to the prediction of Dmitri Mendeleev, that there would be another actinium-like element following actinium in the periodic table. Brevium was a temporary name given to the element by Fajans before it was formally named Protoactinium in 1949. Actinon is a term coined by Andre-Louis Debierne in 1899, which he gave to an unknown radioactive substance produced from uranium decaye.
