A psychogenic fugue is a rare and complex mental disorder characterized by a sudden and unexplainable departure from one's normal routine. Synonymous terms for psychogenic fugue include dissociative fugue, fugue state, and psychic fugue, all of which refer to a temporary loss of one's sense of identity, memory, and awareness of one's surroundings. Other interchangeable terms include dissociative amnesia, automatic behavior, and wandering amnesia. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, they all describe the same mysterious phenomenon of sudden and unexplained disorientation and loss of identity. The causes of psychogenic fugue are not yet fully understood, but it is believed to be linked to stressful or traumatic life events.
