Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, or RBD, is a condition in which a person acts out their dreams during REM sleep. Some synonyms for this term include REM sleep disorder, rapid eye movement behavior disorder, and dream enactment disorder. Other similar terms include parasomnia, sleepwalking, and sleep-related movement disorders. This condition can be caused by certain medications, sleep deprivation, or neurological disorders, and can result in injury to the person or their bed partner. Treatment for RBD includes medication, changes in sleep hygiene, and sometimes, a diagnosis and treatment of any underlying neurological conditions.
