However, there are synonyms for RPM that can be used to describe the process. One such synonym is facilitated communication (FC), which involves a facilitator physically guiding the individual's hand to communicate through typing, pointing or gesturing. Another synonym is augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), which involves the use of technology to aid communication. Picture exchange communication system (PECS) is also a synonym, which involves the use of pictures or symbols to communicate a message. Regardless of the method used, the ultimate goal remains to help individuals with autism improve their communication skills, leading to a better quality of life.
