Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the most celebrated artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Best known for his portrait paintings, Rembrandt is often referred to as the "Master of Light and Shadow" due to his exceptional use of chiaroscuro. Some popular synonyms for Rembrandt include the Dutch painter, the great Rembrandt, or simply Rembrandt. He is also known as Harmenszoon van Rijn, as "Harmensz" was his father's name and was often used by Rembrandt himself, and Ryn, the anglicized version of his name. Some of his most famous works include Night Watch, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp and The Jewish Bride.
