Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited eye disorder that affects the retina, causing progressive vision loss over time. There are several synonymous terms that describe this condition, including tapetoretinal degeneration, pigmentary retinopathy, and rod-cone dystrophy. All of these terms refer to the degeneration of the photoreceptor cells in the retina, which are responsible for detecting light and sending signals to the brain. RP can cause symptoms such as night blindness, tunnel vision, and loss of central vision. While there is currently no cure for RP, there are treatments available to slow its progression and improve quality of life for those affected.
