A rights offering is a type of securities offering where existing shareholders are given the right to purchase additional shares of stock at a discounted price. There are a number of synonyms for the term "rights offering," including "subscription offering," "share purchase plan," and "preemptive rights offering." In a subscription offering, shareholders are able to subscribe to new shares at a predetermined price. Share purchase plans are similar in that shareholders are given the opportunity to purchase additional shares, but often these plans use a payroll deduction method to fund the purchases over time. Preemptive rights offering is the term used to describe the practice of offering shares to current shareholders before they are offered to the general public.
