Ringwoodite is a rare mineral that is found deep within the Earth's mantle. Some of the synonyms for this mineral include high-pressure polymorph, dense hydrous magnesium silicate, and MG-silicate perovskite. It has also been referred to as a bridgmanite, as it was first discovered by geologist Ted Ringwood in 1969. Other terms used to describe this mineral include ultra-high-pressure mineral and structurally coherent perovskite. Ringwoodite is known for its unique properties, including its ability to store water, which has led to speculation about the role that it may play in the water cycle of the Earth's mantle.
