Rock Gibraltar is an ancient fortress in the British territory of Gibraltar. It has many synonyms like the Rock of Gibraltar, The Rock, The Pillars of Hercules, and Jebel Tariq. The name Gibraltar comes from the Arabic word Jabal Tariq, which means "mountain of Tariq." Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Berber general who conquered Spain for the Moors in 711 CE. The rock is 426 meters high and is made mainly of limestone. Gibraltar is home to an extraordinary range of fauna and flora, including over 500 recorded species of plants. The Rock is also famous for its Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe.
