The Royal Ulster Constabulary was the police force in Northern Ireland from 1922 to 2001. In 2001, the force was restructured and renamed as the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The name "Royal Ulster Constabulary" can also be referred to using synonyms such as "RUC", "Ulster police force", "Belfast police", "Northern Ireland Police", "Northern Ireland Constabulary", "Her Majesty's police in Northern Ireland" and "Provincial police". It is important to note that while these terms may be used interchangeably, they refer to the same police force in Northern Ireland and their history and reputation are still relevant today.
