The Santee Sioux people are a Native American tribe primarily residing in the Dakotas. They have a rich cultural heritage and have sometimes been referred to as the Dakota people, Waŋnǧí Šakówiŋ, or Eastern Dakota. In addition to these names, the Santee Sioux have also been known as the Isanyati, Isanti, or Bdewakantunwan. These different names reflect the various dialects and subgroups within the Santee Sioux tribe. Regardless of their name, the Santee Sioux have faced a long history of oppression, including the infamous U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and have been working to reclaim their land, culture, and sovereignty ever since.
