Sawfishes are a group of cartilaginous fish distinguishable by their long, flat snouts lined with sharp teeth-like projections called "rostral teeth." These fish are often referred to as "sawsharks" or "saw- nosed sharks" due to their physical appearance. They are also known as "carpenters" in some regions due to their saw-like snouts which resemble a wood saw. Another synonym for sawfishes is "pristids," which derives from their scientific name, Pristidae. Additionally, sawfishes are often grouped into species such as the smalltooth sawfish, the largetooth sawfish, and the green sawfish, each having their own unique characteristics that set them apart from one another.
