A sensory neuron, also known as an afferent neuron, is a nerve cell that transmits signals from sensory receptors to the central nervous system (CNS). There are several different synonyms for sensory neurons, such as somatosensory neuron, nociceptor neuron, and mechanoreceptor neuron. Somatosensory neurons are responsible for detecting touch, pressure, temperature, and pain, and transmitting this information to the CNS. Nociceptor neurons specifically detect pain signals, while mechanoreceptor neurons detect sensations such as pressure, vibration, and stretch. Other synonyms for sensory neurons include primary afferent neuron, peripheral sensory neuron, and unipolar neuron. These neurons play a critical role in our ability to perceive and respond to stimuli in our environment.
