The seventh cranial nerve is commonly known as the facial nerve. It is responsible for controlling movement in the facial muscles, including blinking, smiling, and frowning. Other synonyms for the seventh cranial nerve include the nervus facialis, cranial nerve VII, and CN VII. In addition to its motor functions, the facial nerve also plays a role in transmitting taste sensations from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue and in regulating the secretion of certain salivary and lacrimal glands. Dysfunction or damage to the facial nerve can result in facial paralysis or other sensory and motor deficits.
