Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning Province in northeast China, is also known as Mukden, Fengtian, and Shengjing. These names have been used in different periods of Chinese history. Mukden was the name given to the city during the Qing dynasty. Fengtian was the name given during the Republic of China era when Shenyang was the capital of Fengtian province. Shengjing was the original name of the city, under the Manchu rule. Besides these historical names, Shenyang is also known as the "Northeastern Ruhr" due to its importance as an industrial center in the northeast region of China.
