Slaters are small, flat-bodied insects also known as woodlice or pill bugs. They are often found in damp areas, such as under rocks or in gardens. There are several synonyms for slaters, including sow bugs, roly polies, and potato bugs. Other regional names include cheeselog, monkey peas, and pill woodlice. Despite their name, slaters are not related to true lice and are actually more closely related to crustaceans, like crabs and lobsters. While they may be considered pests by some gardeners, slaters can actually be helpful by helping to break down organic matter and aerating the soil.
