The southeastern coyote, also known as the coywolf, is a hybrid species between a western coyote and a gray wolf. Other synonyms for the southeastern coyote include the eastern coyote, red wolf, brush wolf, and coydog. The eastern coyote is larger than its western counterpart, reaching up to 60 pounds in weight, and has been known to adapt well to human-populated areas. The red wolf, once believed to be extinct, has been reintroduced to its native southeastern habitat and shares many physical and behavioral characteristics with the southeastern coyote. The brush wolf and coydog are both terms used to describe hybrids between coyotes and domestic dogs.
