Southern white cedar, also known as swamp cedar, grows in wetlands and swamps in the southeastern United States. This tree's scientific name is Chamaecyparis thyoides, but it has many common names. Other synonyms for southern white cedar include Atlantic white cedar, southern Atlantic white cedar, and white cedar. In addition to swamp cedar, it is also called Gulf white cedar or Gulf coast cedar. It is a slow-growing evergreen tree with pale bark and tends to grow best in damp soil. It is often used for fencing material, furniture, and decorative purposes like Christmas trees because of its aromatic qualities.
