Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy is a medical condition also known as Kennedy's disease, which is a rare genetic disorder that affects the muscles of the body. Synonyms for this condition include spinobulbar muscular atrophy, progressive bulbar palsy with lower motor neuron involvement, and lower motor neurone disease causing recessive X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy. This condition occurs when the gene encoding the androgen receptor, which is located on the X chromosome, undergoes a mutation. Symptoms of the disease include muscle wasting and weakness, difficulty speaking and swallowing, and breathing difficulty. While there is no cure, treatments are available to manage the symptoms and improve quality of life for those affected.
