Spirillum fever, also known as rat-bite fever, is a rare bacterial illness that can be transmitted to humans from infected animals such as rats. The symptoms of the disease include fever, muscle aches, headache, vomiting, and a rash. There are several names for this disease in medical literature, including streptobacillary fever, spirillary fever, and Haverhill fever. Although these names differ in their wording, they all refer to the same illness caused by the same bacterium, Streptobacillus moniliformis. Treatment involves the use of antibiotics to combat the bacterial infection and to prevent complications such as endocarditis or septicemia.
