Spirochetes are a class of bacteria that possess a distinctive spiral shape in addition to an exterior flagella which propel them via a corkscrew motion. The term "Spirochete" is often used synonymously with the genus Treponema, which represents a significant subset of spirochetes. However, there are also many other subtypes beyond Treponema, including Borrelia, Leptospira, and Brachyspira. Collectively known as spirochetes there are some other alternative words, such as spiral bacteria, corkscrew bacteria, and helical bacteria.
