St Matthew the Apostle, also known as Matthew the Evangelist, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. He is known for writing the Gospel of Matthew, which tells the story of Jesus' life, teachings, death, and resurrection. In addition to being an apostle and evangelist, St Matthew is also sometimes called Levi or Matthew the Tax Collector. This is because before he became a disciple, he worked as a tax collector for the Romans. St Matthew is also often depicted carrying a lance, perhaps because he was martyred by being stabbed with a spear. Regardless of the name or title used to refer to him, St Matthew is remembered as a devoted follower of Jesus and an important figure in the early Christian church.
