The Strelitzia family, also known as the Bird of Paradise family, includes five species of tropical flowering plants native to South Africa. The genus is named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III. All members of the Strelitzia family have large, showy flowers that resemble the shape and colors of exotic birds. Some synonyms for the Strelitzia family include the Crane flower family and the Plantain bird family. Despite being a popular ornamental plant, the Strelitzia family is also cultivated for medicinal and edible purposes in some regions of South Africa.
