The stroma of cornea is primarily composed of collagen fibrils which give the cornea its unique shape and transparency. While there are few direct synonyms for the stroma of cornea, other terms can help further specify this tissue. For example, the Bowman's layer is a specialized layer of the stroma that serves as a protective barrier against injury. The Descemet's membrane is another layer that sits between the stroma and the endothelium. Additionally, the term corneal collagenous matrix can be used to describe the structural network of intertwined collagen fibers that make up the stroma. Other terms that may be used to describe the stroma include corneal tissue or the corneal stromal layer.
