Suborder Tarsioidea is a classification for primates that includes tarsiers, unique creatures that are found only in Southeast Asia. Some synonyms for tarsiers include "spectral primates," due to the large eyes and nocturnal tendencies of the animals; "dwarf monkeys," which refers to their small size; and "owl monkeys," which refers to their large eyes, similar to those of owls. Tarsiers have been given the scientific name Tarsidae, which is also sometimes used as a synonym for the suborder Tarsioidea. These small primates are considered to be evolutionary links between primitive primates and modern anthropoids, and their classification continues to be debated by scientists.
