Suggillation refers to the discoloration of skin from the extravasation of blood. There are several synonyms for suggillation such as contusion, ecchymosis, hematoma, bruise, and petechia. Contusion is the medical term for a bruise, which occurs after trauma to the skin or soft tissue. Ecchymosis involves bleeding into the skin due to the rupture of blood vessels. Hematoma refers to localized bleeding outside of blood vessels and can range from mild to severe. Petechia is another type of bleeding disorder, characterized by small red or purple spots on the skin. While suggillation, contusion, ecchymosis, hematoma, and petechia share similarities, they differ in their causes, symptoms, and treatments.
