It is also referred to as the nerve of the supraspinatus or the supraspinatus nerve. The nerve is called suprascapular because it runs superiorly over the scapula bone. Furthermore, it is sometimes referred to as the posterior scapular nerve, indicating its location at the back of the shoulder. Finally, it may be referred to as the cranial nerve V, C5 because it is derived from the fifth cervical spinal nerve.
