The Surinam River, also known as the Suriname River or Surinamerivier, is a major waterway in South America. It is located in the country of Suriname and runs for approximately 480 kilometers from its source in the Guiana Highlands to the Atlantic Ocean. The river is sometimes referred to as the Commewijne or Coppename River, which are two of its tributaries. Other synonyms for the Surinam River include the Surinamekanaal, Marowijne River, and Lawa River. The Surinam River is of great economic and cultural significance to the people of Suriname and is often used for transportation, fishing, and recreation.
