Takahe, scientifically known as Porphyrio hochstetteri, is a flightless bird species endemic to New Zealand. However, the word takahe has several synonyms that are used interchangeably in different contexts. The most common synonym is the blue bird, given the bird's characteristic blue coloration. Other synonyms for takahe include the Notornis, a Maori name, takahē, and the South Island takahē. Moreover, some people also refer to the takahe as the North Island takahe, although this is not scientifically accurate. Nonetheless, regardless of whichever synonym is used, the takahe remains an iconic and rare bird in New Zealand and conservation efforts must be made to protect it.
