Tarsiiformes is a scientific name given to the primate family that includes tarsiers. Though tarsiiformes and tarsiers are often used synonymously, there are some synonyms for the word tarsiiformes, such as tarsier-like primates or haplorhine primates. Haplorhine primates are the suborder to which tarsiiformes belong along with anthropoids (monkeys, apes, and humans). Tarsiers are small arboreal primates with enormous eyes and long hind legs that are perfectly adapted for leaping from one tree to another. They are found in the forests of Southeast Asia and the Philippines and are known for their unique vocalizations, which can only be heard by humans with special equipment. Despite being nocturnal and shy animals, tarsiers are prized as exotic pets, and their habitats are threatened by habitat loss and other factors.
