TB, otherwise known as tuberculosis, is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. There are various synonyms for this disease, including consumption, phthisis, and white plague. Consumption was a term commonly used in the past because it described the way the disease caused its victims to waste from within. Phthisis and white plague describe the physical appearance of the lungs affected by the disease, which become consumed with scars and white lesions. Other synonyms that have since fallen out of popular use are scrofula, lupus vulgaris, and Pott's disease. While TB is a serious illness, effective treatments have been developed to manage and cure the infection.
