The Tropic of Capricorn is an imaginary line that runs across the southern hemisphere at a latitude of approximately 23.5 degrees south of the equator. It is also known as the southern tropic or simply the Capricorn line. Other synonyms for the Tropic of Capricorn include the circle of latitude 23°30′ south, the parallel of latitude 23°30′ south, and the line of Capricorn. It marks the southernmost point where the Sun is directly overhead on the December solstice. The name "Capricorn" comes from the astrological sign of the same name, which is associated with the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere.
