Tikal, the ancient Mayan city in Guatemala, has been known by several different names throughout history. In Mayan language, it was called Yax Mutul, which means 'first Mutul'. During colonial times, the city was referred to as Gran Jaguar. Another name for Tikal is The Place of the Voices, as it was believed that the gods spoke to the people who lived there. Some of the other names used for Tikal include 'City of the Dawn', 'City of the Starry Sky', 'City of the Mystery' and 'The Mayan Rome'. Despite having various names, Tikal remains an iconic landmark in Central America and a testament to the brilliance of the ancient Mayan civilization.
