Troilite, also known as pyrrhotite, is a mineral composed of iron sulfide. It has a metallic luster and a bronze-yellow color. Unlike other sulfide minerals, troilite is not abundant in nature. Its name is derived from the French mineralogist, Armand Dufrenoy, who named it after the Norwegian mineralogist, Paul J. Troil. There are several synonyms for the word "troilite", including iron pyrite, pyrrhotine, magnetic pyrite, and magnetic sulfide. These names are used interchangeably to refer to this mineral.
