Under-woods refer to the dense growth of trees and shrubs that thrive below the canopy of a forest. The understory is the layer of vegetation that exists below the tree canopy and is rich in flowering plants, bushes, and small trees. The underbrush, on the other hand, consists of thickets of shrubs and bushes that grow close to the ground. The shrub layer refers to the plants that grow less than ten feet in height and are an essential component of the forest ecosystem.
