USGS maps, or United States Geological Survey maps, are widely used for navigation, resource management, and research. However, there are several synonymous terms for these maps that may help broaden their application. Topographic maps, for example, are highly detailed and display land elevation data, in addition to natural and human-made features. Quadrangle maps represent a smaller area than topographic maps, with more focused detail. Geologic maps provide knowledge about rock formations, mineral resources, and hydrological systems. Lastly, satellite images can offer an alternative to traditional USGS maps, but they lack some of the detailed information found in maps produced through field surveys. Understanding these synonyms for USGS maps can help broaden the ability of researchers, cartographers, and others who rely on these resources.
