A variable resistor is an electrical component that is used to vary the amount of resistance in a circuit. It is also commonly referred to as a rheostat or a potentiometer. A rheostat is used to vary current flowing through a circuit, whilst a potentiometer is used to vary voltage. There are several other synonyms for the term variable resistor, including adjustable resistor, variable potentiometer, variable controller, and adjustable potentiometer. The use of variable resistors is widespread in electrical engineering, and they are used in numerous applications for controlling circuit parameters such as frequency response, gain control, and signal level attenuation.
