Vascular access steal syndrome is a medical condition that occurs when blood flow to the hand or arm is compromised as a result of dialysis access. Sometimes referred to as steal syndrome, this condition can cause pain, numbness, and decreased functionality in the affected limb. Other synonyms for vascular access steal syndrome include dialysis access induced ischemic steal syndrome, hemodialysis-induced ischemic steal syndrome, and access-induced ischemic steal. Though it can be a troublesome and painful condition, there are a number of treatment options available to help manage symptoms and improve blood flow to affected areas. With proper care and management, many patients can experience relief from vascular access steal syndrome.
