A volcanic crater is a hollow, circular depression formed by a volcanic eruption. There are several synonyms for the word "volcanic crater", such as "caldera," which is a large volcanic crater formed by the collapse of a volcano into itself after a massive eruption. Another synonym is "crateriform", which refers to crater-shaped or resembling a crater. "Cauldron" is another synonym, used to describe a shallow volcanic crater with acidic water or mud. "Maw" can also be used to describe a volcanic crater, particularly one with a gaping or wide opening. Finally, "vent" can be used to describe the opening in the earth's surface from which lava and other volcanic materials are emitted.
