Vombatus ursinus is the scientific name for the commonly known Australian animal, the common wombat. The name Vombatus ursinus is derived from the Latin words Vombatus meaning "a burrower" and Ursinus meaning "bear-like". In terms of synonyms, the common wombat is also referred to as the coarse-haired wombat, and occasionally the bare-nosed wombat. Wombats are marsupials and are the largest burrowing herbivorous mammal, native to Australia. The common wombat has a stout and sturdy body, with strong legs and sharp claws that enable them to dig extensive burrow systems. Despite their appearance and size, they are herbivores and feed mainly on grasses, roots, and bark.
